College Planning

When planning for college the time is now to prepare. Students and parents often need help with information about what is expected from the standpoint of college admissions. Sometimes the requirements differ from in-state and out-of-state institutions. When browsing the information below, please be aware that this is a great starting point when it comes to the ultimate goal of being selected by the college and/or university.

The goals of preparing for post high school education are:

  • To produce career-minded students with areas of concentration in fields of study that pertain to students interests and not just general studies.
  • To create a path of success in which students continue their high achievement through rigourous coursework and magnet infused curriculum.
  • To further their advanced placement at the college and university levels.

BAND AND ORCHESTRA OVERVIEW

Students are trained to perform individually and as members of ensembles. All music students participate as musicians in the Jazz, Concert Bands or the Orchestra. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of instrumental technique, rhythm, sight-reading, improvisation, and performance. Within the curriculum these fundamentals, along with music theory, history, and literacy, provide students with a strong musical foundation.

Participation in district and state music education organizations further the students’ knowledge of music and confidence in their musical ability.

ORCHESTRA

The primary focus of the Instrumental Music department at MAS is to assist students in understanding that Music is a vital part of the human experience that helps us understand world cultures, past and present. Music students are able to choose from among a variety of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in the band strand and string instruments in the orchestra strand.

MUSIC AUDITION CRITERIA

BAND – GRADE 6-8

  • Beginning Wind/Percussion - No experience with Wind/Percussion instruments is necessary to audition or to be accepted into the program.
  • Concert Band - The student should prepare a musical selection, and be able to play the Bb and Eb Major Scales one octave with arpeggio from memory.

BAND – GRADE 9-12

  • Applicants will prepare for performance without accompaniment two excerpts (two minutes each) in contrasting styles of Grade Two or higher from the Florida Bandmaster Association list.

  • Beginning Strings – No experience with string instruments is necessary to audition or to be accepted into the program.
  • String Orchestra – The student should prepare a musical selection, and be able to play the C, G, and D Major scales one octave from memory.

ORCHESTRA/STRINGS – GRADE 9-12

  • Applicants will prepare for performance without accompaniment two excerpts (two minutes each) in contrasting styles of Grade Two or higher from the Florida Orchestra Association list, and/or comparable material from Suzuki, Wohlfahrt, Schroeder, Strum-Zimmerman, Kruetzer, and Kayser.
  • Applicants will be asked to perform four major scales (not to exceed four flats/sharps) two octaves with arpeggio from memory.

BROADCASTING OVERVIEW

In the Broadcasting program, within the Technical Production strand, MAS students will learn public speaking and broadcast writing skills, as well as producing, writing, filming, and editing video productions. In a state-of-the-art studio, teams produce the morning announcements on CCTV. Broadcasting students also produce other multimedia productions, such as news packages, music videos, commercials, public service announcements, short films, documentaries, and social media production.

DANCE OVERVIEW

Providing a nurturing and stimulating educational environment, the Dance program at MAS offers a wide range of dance disciplines and methodologies. The dance curriculum is designed to offer students a strong technical base, to expand their knowledge of dance as an art form and to inspire passionate creativity in our students. Emphasis is placed on technique, dance history, health/nutrition, choreography and performance. Students participate in ballet, modern, jazz and ethnic dance classes. Dance composition and improvisation make up the balance of our well-rounded dance curriculum.

DANCE AUDITION CRITERIA

  • Participate in a ballet barre and center floor exercises.
  • Perform a short solo dance not to exceed 1 ½ minutes long. The solo may be performed in any dance style. Music must be provided on a CD or I-Pod.
  • Wear appropriate dance attire and shoes for audition. Sweats and jewelry are not acceptable.
  • A personal interview to help determine the student's level of discipline, interest and suitability for the program.

ENTERTAINMENT LAW OVERVIEW

The Entertainment Law studio introduces students to the American legal system, and specifically to law that covers the broad scope of entertainment. Students will learn that entertainment lawyers provide services to the entertainment industry, including film, music, television, theater, publishing, visual arts, and multimedia. They also represent sports stars and other celebrities. Entertainment lawyers negotiate and write contracts, deal with intellectual property issues, and practice employment and labor law. Entertainment law students will learn the fundamentals of American law and its origins. They will also gain understanding of the justice system as it pertains to the entertainment industry. Students will develop by improving their speaking, debating and conflict resolution skills, as well as learning research techniques and protocols.

TECH PRODUCTION OVERVIEW

Students in the MAS Theatrical Technical Production strand will be introduced to exciting career preparation in Technical Design. This Technical Production strand will offer students a creative environment in which to learn the different aspects of theatrical design and production. The stand establishes a hands-on approach to directing, stage management, theatre management, publicity, costume, theatrical makeup, sound, lighting and scenic design, including application and construction techniques. Students in the MAS Digital Technical Production will have the opportunity to learn industry leading graphic software (Adobe Creative Suite and Office 2016) and digital design techniques and applications that are used to create and edit photographs, sound, video, animation, and publications. Students learn a vast array of content through project based learning and will begin their trek towards industry certifications. All students entering the program will remain in the program for a 7 year progression.

THEATRE TECH PRODUCTION (HIGH SCHOOL ONLY) INTERVIEW CRITERIA

  • A personal interview to help determine the student's level of interest, discipline, and suitability for the program.
  • An original portfolio with no fewer than 10 examples of the student's best work is required at the time of interview. Examples of work the portfolio might contain are:
    • Drawings or painitngs from arts classes (not necessarily related to theatrical design)
    • Photographs of three-dimensional work, models, sculpture
    • Renderings and sketches (fashion, costumes, set designs)
    • Visual examples showing the applicant's highest level achievement, graphic abilities and artistic vision
    • Examples of woodworking skills, furniture projects, masks, puppets or craft projects
    • Sketchbooks, preliminary sketches (showing your range of artistic expression)

THEATRE OVERVIEW

The goal of the Theatre Arts program at MAS is to develop a quality product through an emphasis on the artistic process. Students will learn through a course of study that furthers the disciplines of the theatre arts, including movement, voice, and the structural elements of theatre. The process includes developing skills in self-awareness, concentration, listening, observation, problem solving, critical thinking, and performance. The curriculum, also, provides students with the techniques they need to freely express their creativity. The study of theatre history, literature, and the production of theatre create a well-rounded and prepared theatre arts student. Students are expected to be involved in extra-curricular theatre activities, including district and state theatre education organizations. These opportunities give students the ability to perform, participate in productions and share their talent with other students and the community.

THEATRE AUDITION CRITERIA - GRADE 6-8

  • Perform a memorized monologue from a published theatre work. This monologue must not exceed 1½ minutes and should be reflective of the applicant’s age group. Judges will be looking for naturalness, honesty, vocal projection and focus.
  • Participate in a practical session including theatre games and improvisations. Students are advised to use creativity, imagination and concentration.
  • Demonstrate acceptable proficiency on a theatre terminology survey.
  • Sing a short verse (16 bars) from a Broadway Musical (optional). You must bring an instrumental CD for accompaniment or sing a Capella.
  • Dress in comfortable attire. NO skirts or dresses. Wear dance shoes, sneakers or closed flat shoes.
  • A personal interview to help determine the student's level of discipline, interest and suitability for the program.

THEATRE AUDITION CRITERIA - GRADE 9-12

  • Student must present two (2) contrasting selections which may be from different time periods, styles, or moods.
  • Material must be drawn from published plays written for the theatre. Poetry, fiction, screenplays, and lyrics will not be allowed.
  • Each monologue must be from a different play and portray a different character.
  • All material should be presented as if within the context of a full production.
  • Both selections combined cannot exceed three (3) minutes.
  • Participate in a practical session including theatre games and improvisations. Students are advised to use creativity, imagination and concentration.
  • Demonstrate acceptable proficiency on a theatre terminology survey.
  • Sing a short verse (16 bars) from a Broadway Musical (optional). You must bring an instrumental CD for accompaniment or sing a Capella.
  • Dress in comfortable attire. NO skirts or dresses. Wear dance shoes, sneakers or closed flat shoes.

VOCAL OVERVIEW

The Chorus/Vocal program at MAS provides vocal development training. From basic technique to performance mastery, the program strives to uphold a high standard of self-discipline and personal growth. While learning the fundamentals of singing in both solo and choral settings, students learn basic musicianship and the principles of vocal music education, such as: diction, interpretation, breath management, musical terminology, sight-reading and music history are included in the course of study. Using group learning in addition to individual work, students are led through a basic repertoire of age-appropriate literature and progress toward a better understanding of good vocal habits and universal expectations for musicians. Participation in district and state music education organizations further the students’ knowledge of music and confidence in their musical ability.

CHORUS/VOCAL – GRADE 6-8

  • Vocalists should prepare a solo in their natural voice. A simple hymn, patriotic song, folk song or ballad will suffice. An accompanist is neither provided nor required. Solo can be done a Capella. Pop, Rock or Rap music is not acceptable for the audition.
  • Applicants will be asked to sing tonal patterns, sight read, and complete a brief theory placement test. The theory and sight reading will be used for selecting the correct class level and not for admission to the program.

CHORUS/VOCAL – GRADE 9-12

  • Applicants will prepare for performance, with or without accompaniment, one memorized song either from traditional classical repertoire (i.e. any piece from the 24 Italian Arias book) or the American songbook sung in a jazz style. Pop, Rock or Rap music is not acceptable for the audition. The performance should demonstrate healthy vocal technique and great stage presence. If performing with accompaniment you must provide a CD or USB recording which contains only the musical accompaniment for the solo. A CD/USB player will be provided.
  • Applicants will be asked to sing tonal patterns, sight read, and complete a brief theory placement test.
